1st Filipino-American Miss USA wins Miss Universe,


PEORIA (25 News Now) – R’Bonney Gabriel has become the ninth woman from the United States to hold the title of Miss Universe. She was also the first Filipino-American to win Miss USA.

First place went to Amanda Dudamel from Venezuela and second place went to Andreina Martinez from the Dominican Republic.

The Philippines missed the Top 16 finals for the first time in 12 years.

Eighty-four women from around the world competed in the 71st Miss Universe pageant held in New Orleans, Louisiana at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

The women spent two weeks at the Big Easy, attended Mardi Gras events, interviewed and performed with the media at rehearsals, competed in preliminary contests, and visited sites in Louisiana.

Gabriel was crowned by India’s 70th Miss Universe Harunaz Sandhu. It is the first time in 20 years that India holds the title.

The last time Miss USA won Miss Universe was Olivia Culpo 2012.

Miss Universe is part of the world’s “Big 5” international pageants, including Miss Earth, Miss Supranational, Miss International and Miss Globe.
