A fashion student at Mount Mary College caught the attention of the director of the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art last May. She had organized the exhibit around the same house idea as the theme in class.

Brungart, director of the museum, Gabriele Haberlan, said their work resonated so well with the MMoCA exhibit that he decided to bring them in. After months of communication, Martinez and Storrs For a select few students, such as, their work moved from regular class assignments to exhibitions.
“My heart was beating super, super fast. I was so excited, so nervous,” Storrs said. “I never thought I would have this chance in my life.”
Elena Pitts, assistant professor at the University of Mount Mary, is thrilled to have such an opportunity for her students. Especially since it’s common in their industry for artists to leave without getting the recognition they deserve, she said.
“On the business side of things like that marketing, we sometimes[lose]very good designers just because they are not business savvy and they are into art,” she said. explained.
For many of the young artists involved, getting there has been a journey of self-discovery and, at times, an emotional one. Martinez, a fashion student, said she was initially overwhelmed by the idea of defining a home.
After taking a step back, she was able to find her way. It started with her roots.
“I was born and raised in Mexico to Mexican parents,” she said. “They made me feel like I was part of the culture.”
So she decided to incorporate that culture into her designs. We hope it resonates with museum visitors heading to the exhibition on the third floor.
“When someone can feel like, ‘Oh, that’s what I’m going to wear or do, this person gets it, they get me, they get my culture.’ It’s enough for me to be happy and proud anytime,” she said.
