NEW YORK (WNCN) — A little over a year after his death, Christie’s will auction the collection of legendary fashion editor and NC Central alumnus André Leon Talley in February.
The collection includes custom couture, personalized handbags and artwork, Christie’s said in a news release on Thursday.
The sale features a 2-piece set:
- Personalized Brown Monogram Canvas Hardside Train Case and Brown Monogram Canvas Hardside Train Case from the movie Sex and the City
- A gold brocade caftan by Dapper Dan and Talley’s iconic Straw Boater hat.
According to Christie’s, the collection is also highlighted by Andy Warhol’s “Candy Box (True Love)” painting, a personal gift from the artist to Tally.
Tully was the first black man to hold the title of creative director for American Vogue.
“Mr. Tully held a rare position in the fashion industry. His discerning tastes extend far beyond fashion, and his personal collection includes haute couture, handbags, jewellery, and fine arts. , literature, and the decorative arts.Overall, the collection is engaging and intimate, and includes works by Karl Lagerfeld, Diane von Furstenberg, Ralph Rucci, Tom Ford, Diana Vreeland, It reflects his decades-long relationship with icons such as Anna Wintour.
Proceeds from the live and online auctions will benefit the Abyssinian Baptist Church of New York and the Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church of Durham, North Carolina. Both were close to Talley’s heart, Christie’s said.
CBS 17 reached out to Durham Church for comment, but did not hear back from them.
Tully passed away on January 18, 2022 at the age of 73.
