Menorah lighting at Fashion Island marks the start of Hanukkah

Where the Fashion Island Christmas tree stands, so does the menorah that celebrates Hanukkah.

At the shopping center’s atrium garden court, the Chabad Jewish Life Center oversaw the ceremonial lighting of helper candles late Sunday afternoon.

The event kicked off the festivities with a performance by Los Judios Locos and distributed toys to children in need. Attendees also had access to holiday treats, Hanukkah crafts, face painting, and balloon animals.

“[Hanukkah] Rabbi Reuven Mintz of the Chabad Center for Jewish Life said in a statement: “Once upon a time, our ancestors rededicated the temple of Jerusalem. Rededicate ourselves to making this world a better and brighter place. Hanukkah also conveys the universal message that ultimately good triumphs over evil, freedom triumphs over oppression, and light triumphs over darkness. ”

This year Hanukkah will continue until December 26th.
