Victory was not easy for the Argentinian. The eventual champions led 2–0 at half before Kylian Mbappe added a brace in the second half to tie things up in the 81st minute.
Messi scored from inside the box in extra time to put Argentina in the lead.
Once again Argentina were unable to contain the French attack and Mbappe scored a hat-trick goal from the penalty spot with just minutes remaining.
The World Cup final went to a penalty shootout, ending in dramatic fashion.
Argentina scored on all four shots and Gonzalo Montiel scored the win on his fourth shot. Emiliano Martinez made a monumental stop to Aurelian Chuameni early in the shootout and Kingsley Coman also missed Les Bleus targets.
The FanDuel Sportsbook listed Argentina at +600 to win the World Cup at the start of the quarterfinals.
