The Newburgh United Methodist Church Clothing Center has been serving the needs of Newburgh and the surrounding area for over 35 years, providing quality, clean used clothing and accessories at minimal cost.
The clothing center’s origins date back to the mid-1980s. It all started when a few women in the church started collecting blankets and clothing for poor families in the area. These women saw a need and wanted to do what they could to meet that need. The women quickly realized that the vision they had was the vision others wanted to engage with.
They collected clothing, shoes, coats, and other wearable items, sorted them by size and gender, and put them in banana boxes. Families and individuals were allowed to come to the church on designated days to browse the items collected and take home anything they needed for their family. It was done by a small team of volunteers.
When the church purchased the former Newburgh Elementary School on North High Street, the small clothing distribution center found a new home and used the school’s former library and several other rooms to store clothing and serve as display areas. Did. Since that time, the Garment Center has continued to grow and become a viable part of the church’s mission to “know and make known Christ”.
Much has changed in over 30 years, but the overall goal of providing quality, clean second-hand clothing to those in and around the Newburgh community remains the same. For just $2, shoppers could fill thousands of shopping bags with clothing for the entire family. Starting January 1, 2023, the price of a clothing bag will increase from $2 to $3 for the first time since the Clothing Center opened in its new location this year. The members of the Garment Center Committee are very proud of this fact. They didn’t have to raise his prices unheard of in over 30 years, but with the cost of everything going up these days, they had no choice but to raise them, but only by a dollar. A very minimal price to provide a necessary service to the community.
The Newburgh Clothing Center is open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9am to noon and Thursdays from 6pm to 8pm.
The Clothing Center is located in the church at 203 N. High Street in Newburgh. There is ample parking behind the church and beside the clothing center. Donations are welcomed at any time during normal business hours. We are always looking for volunteers! Plan a trip to Newburgh for the New Year and stop by the Clothing Center to find the best clothing bargains you’ll find anywhere.
