The SMCP Group, an accessible luxury fashion company in France, is making a big move towards reducing the use of animal products. The group, the parent company of Sandro, Maje, Claudie Pierlo and Fursac, has officially committed to going feather and down from fall 2023.
In a statement to WWDA spokesperson for the fashion group said, “Through its four brands, the group has committed to completely eliminating duck and goose feathers by the fall 2023 season. Brands are slowly transitioning away from using these materials. The group says the full transition will be complete by next fall collection.
Yvonne Taylor, Director of Corporate Projects at PETA, commented on SMCP’s choice to remove down and feathers as a material. We congratulate this move and call on other brands to do the same and cut ties with the abusive and cruel down industry. In 2020, the SMCP Group announced a commitment to stop using fur and exotic skins in its products. Sandro has stopped using fur since the Fall/Winter 2018 collection, and Maje has stopped using fur since the Fall/Winter 2019 collection.
The move signals the fashion industry is shifting to a more animal cruelty-free stance as more and more luxury fashion companies announce bans on fur, exotic hides and now down and feather materials. It remains to be seen if other brands will follow suit.
