The Norwich University men’s and women’s swim and dive teams swept Colby Sawyer College at the Goodyear Pools on Saturday afternoon at their final home meeting of the 2022-23 season, celebrating Senior Day festivities in a fun way.
The men’s 191-29 win over the Chargers and the women’s 168-114 sweep.
After Colby-Sawyer kicked off the game with a victory on the women’s side of the 200-yard medley relay, the cadets competed in the next series of events, with Relay A Team Adrian Riandor (Ridgecrest, California), Will Thompson (Downington, Pennsylvania), Benjamin Stark (Montverde, Florida)When Michael Kawenhoven (Fairfield, Connecticut) Won the men’s 200-yard medley relay.
Consecutive Women’s 1000 Yard Freestyle and 200 Yard Freestyle Saw Tess Whalen (Berryville, Virginia) When Hannah Shayner (Gilbertsville, Pennsylvania) Scooping up the first individual victory of the competition, followed by a winning effort from Riendeau in the 200-yard freestyle.
Jenna Tsuchida (Goffstown, New Hampshire) When Tobias Macedo (Kennebunk, Maine) It gave Norwich victory in the 50-yard backstroke event before the Chargers finally returned to the winning side in the 50-yard breaststroke. The cadets rallied again to go on a nine-game winning streak.
The first of those nine was the 50-yard breaststroke, in which Thompson broke the Goodyear pool record with a time of 26.97, breaking the eight-year record held by the former Bates swimmer by 1 millisecond.
Schöner and Stark, before winning the 100-Yard Butterfly, Nicky Avis (Owens Cross Road, Alabama) Kawenhoven had dominant wins in the 100-yard butterfly and 50-yard freestyle. Stark scored another victory behind a 4:55.37 effort in the 500-yard freestyle before Aveys gave Norwich a second pool record-breaking effort in the 50-yard butterfly in a time of 26.25, giving Bates a swim. It broke another record set by the athlete eight years ago. 9 milliseconds. Prior to the day’s events, the swim and dive teams honored and celebrated nine student-athletes in the Class of 2023 at Brennan, Furtado. ‘Today’s seniors game was a perfect occasion to celebrate our final seniors game at Norwich,’ said the head coach. The men really pushed themselves and each other and helped prepare for the GNAC Championship. Will and Nicky each broke their own pool records to come out on top of the competition and we will continue to train hard but the excitement for the championship is in the air.”
Both teams will be back in action on Saturday, January 21 for a tri-meeting at Plymouth State University, which will include Husson College.Start time is scheduled for 11:00 am
